Freight indexes and freight market rates



It should be noted that in recent decades, the publication of a number of freight indices has stopped: the general voyage freight indices of the British Chamber of Shipping, COMECON, etc. Freight indices as the basis for analyzing the state of the market are increasingly losing their importance due to the limited possibility of their use in operational freight activities.

Each vessel can produce one or another type of transport product: to transport any cargo in many directions or various cargoes in one direction using different processing technologies. The reduction of freight rates on different shipments to a comparable type is carried out by calculating the time charter equivalent (TCE), i.e. the daily income of the vessel minus voyage expenses (bunkering costs, port and canal fees, fees for stevedoring work in the part in which they are performed at the expense of the vessel under the terms of the charter). In other words, freight rates for such types of transport products should be equally profitable for the shipowner. Otherwise, some of them will not attract shipowners with all the consequences for charterers.

Thus, TCE, which has long been used as a criterion for evaluating the effectiveness of chartering a vessel on a voyage charter, can serve as a "universal" indicator of the price level of the freight market. This became possible due to the widespread use of computers for collecting, storing and processing information about freight transactions.

It should be emphasized that the assessment of the level of freight market rates using the PCE indicator should be carried out separately for ships of different types: universal bulk carriers, bulk carriers, tankers, etc. For ships of the same purpose, such an assessment should be carried out taking into account their tonnage groups.

An equivalent indicator of the price level in the local freight market with TCE is the rental rate of a trip charter (time charter for a flight). With their help, it is easy to proceed to determining the freight rate for a specific cargo destination, taking into account the costs and time of the voyage, including ballast crossings and possible downtime at loading and unloading ports.
